Exhibiting sheer dominance with literally every major trophy captured including the Art Ross, Hart Memorial, Conn Smythe and Lester B Pearson, Wayne Gretzky would also lead the Edmonton Oilers to their second-consecutive Stanley Cup championship in 1984-85, with his 47 playoff points an NHL record to last the ages. These highly desirable gloves were used by the superstar that very season, and are photo-matched to both the regular season and Stanley Cup playoffs! Jofa 686 models in Oilers colours, large “99” decals have been added over the wrist guard of each glove, with no lacing as originally used by Wayne. Each glove shows great game use, with rubbing to the leather, dark marks and wear to each palm, with no obtrusive damage present whatsoever. Seeing action during the historic 1985 Stanley Cup playoffs, grommet/graphics placement, wear patterns and game wear marks have all been matched to images, with the gloves provenance just as impressive, as the pair originally hail from the collection of Shawn Chaulk.
ADDENDUM; please take note that all of the photo-matches details listed below, and part of the description above, have been updated from our printed catalog version. The gloves are photo-matched to the regular season and to the Stanley Cup Division Finals vs the Winnipeg Jets. It must be noted that although the gloves are not photo-matched to any other playoffs series or to the Stanley Cup Finals, it doesn’t mean they weren’t used throughout the playoffs and/or Stanley Cup Finals as Gretzky was known to always have more than a pair of gloves on hand in the locker room.
An included numeric image from the Division Finals vs the Winnipeg Jets has been perfectly matched to the two long black marks in the white thumb protectors on the left glove.
Next, Getty Image #473885734 (March 26th 1985) has been matched to the pair of black marks on the upper white cuff near the eyelets on the interior of the left glove which also shows correct grommets placement, while the right glove is showing correct placement of the Jofa lettering and grommets placement. Getty Image #473885236 (March 26th 1985) has been matched to the pair of black marks on the upper white cuff near the eyelets on the interior of the left glove, while Getty Image #473176420 (March 26th 1985) has been matched to the scratch in the second "9" of "99" on the right glove. This is followed by Getty Image #473885586, matched to the pair of black marks on the upper white cuff near the eyelets on the interior of the left glove, while the right glove is showing correct placement of the Jofa lettering and correct grommets placement.
Lastly, an additional included numeric image, from a regular season game against the Los Angeles Kings, has been matched to the black marks on the cuff of the left glove and to the placement of the grommets on the interior cuff of the glove. We should also note that clear tape was originally placed over the “99” decals on each glove (these appear in period images), with the tape currently not present over the decals on the left glove.
