Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/2/2022
Paramount lumber hailing from the genesis of the greatest player in NHL history, this amazingly rare stick serves as the earliest pro model produced for the one and only Wayne Gretzky! Based on the original store model Sher-Wood Bobby Clarke pattern Gretzky used in junior with the Soo Greyhounds, when The Great One signed with Indianapolis, he took part in a photo-shoot that included wielding a stock Clarke model, with this likely the base for the offered Victoriaville model. Very few were originally produced, with only three examples currently known including the offered specimen. When Gretzky returned for training camp a few months after the photo-shoot, he was using a Sher-Wood Burgess pro pattern which his first Northland stick was modeled after (pattern #6961). A Vic SOM Pro Pattern model with “Gretsky” (sic) stamped to the upper shaft, the rare stick sports a slightly curved blade, with the striping accent intact. Exhibiting light wear throughout, there is a small chip to the underside of the upper shaft, along with a small dark stain. Hailing from the personal collection of NHL star and Summit Series participant Pat Stapleton and acquired during his time as head coach of the Racers, an LOA from the Stapleton family will accompany.
