Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
A product of the OHA's Toronto Marlboros who helped the club win a Memorial Cup championship during the 1966-67 season, Tom Martin would play three (3) games for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1967-68 campaign before being sent back down to the Marlboros. Toiling in the CHL before making the jump to the upstart WHA for the 1972-73 season, Martin would end up playing a total of 212 WHA games in his career split between the Ottawa Nationals and Toronto Toros. Offered here, we present this Nationals jersey donned by Martin during the club's inaugural and only WHA season of 1972-73. A durene knit garment made by Tricot Sport Maska, a partially detached brand label is affixed to the inner collar while the once attached washing instructions label has been lost to time. Measuring out to roughly a modern size "40" and featuring a classic style tie-neck collar, the front of the jersey has been decorated with a Nationals team crest in layered tackle twill while the sleeves and verso have had Martin's number "17" sewn to them in dual layer white-over-blue tackle twill numerals. Having had "Martin" spelt out in single layer white twill letters across the affixed red twill nameplate that is affixed across the top of the back, the jersey exhibits light-to-moderate game-wear in the form of stick marks over the front hem, reverse and both sleeves, a fabric run over the right elbow, a blue coloured board paint transfer mark on the right side, scrapes to the lower front and right sleeve, additional stick marks over the right shoulder and the back of the neck, a small unrepaired hole/board burn over the left elbow more fabric runs inside the hem line and a red board paint transfer mark through the "7" on the reverse. Additionally, there is pilling, thread fraying and puckering on the interior as well as spot and sweat stains throughout the body and sleeves as well. A true surviving relic from the first season of WHA play!
ADDENDUM - After further check, the jersey measures out closer to a modern size "40" with the pit-to-pit measurement coming in between 19" and 20".
