Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/22/2010
On April 22, 1945, Ted Kennedy and his Toronto Maple Leafs won their hard-fought seven-game series against the Detroit Red Wings to capture the Stanley Cup. This rare gold coin is evidence that boss Ed Bickle was extremely proud and pleased with his men's performance, especially Kennedy's seven-goal playoff performance, including a hat trick in the finals on April 14, 1945. With "10K Birks-Ellis" on the edge, the coin is the size of a Canadian "loonie" (one-dollar coin) and features a maple leaf on the front, along with "Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club - Stanley Cup Winners 1945." The words on the back reveal: "Pass - T. Kennedy - As World's Champion - to Maple Leaf Gardens - At Any Time." Ed Bickle's facsimile signature and "Pres." conclude things. From that day onward, when Teeder arrived at Maple Leaf Gardens, the doors swung wide open for him. Obtained from the family of former Leafs' captain Ted Kennedy, complete with their signed letter of provenance.
