Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010

Ted Kennedy led the Leafs to an upset victory against the Montreal Canadiens in the 1945 Stanley Cup finals. He contributed a playoff-leading 7 goals to capture the silver chalice. Ironically, it was Montreal that first noticed Kennedy's hockey skills, offering to pay his living expenses and tuition if he agreed to come to Montreal to play Junior hockey. This Sterling silver presentation ashtray was gifted by the NHL to members of the victorious Toronto Maple Leafs in 1945. This example, presented to Teeder by the league, is engraved with "National Hockey League Stanley Cup Winners, Season 1944-45, Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club Ltd, Ted Kennedy". The verso is hallmarked and stamped "Hand Made Sterling". Rests for four cigarettes appear at the rim of the 5" in diameter ashtray. In near-excellent condition with toning from years of display. Obtained from the family of former Leafs' captain Ted Kennedy, complete with their signed letter of provenance.
