Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

Possibly the only bench-clearing brawl in IIHF history, the 1987 World Junior Tournament in Piestany of the former Czechoslovakia featured the Russians and Canadians both ejected after the January 4 melee. Neither nation would medal, with the Russians already out of medal contention, while the brawl potentially cost Canada the gold medal. A number of later superstars were present at the incident, including Brendan Shanahan, Theoren Fleury, Mike Keane, Sergei Fedorov, Alexander Mogilny, and Vladimir Konstantinov. Jostens was commissioned by Harold Ballard to produce a medal to be presented to the Canadian players, and we offer an example. At 2 ½” in diameter, the gold-coloured medal features raised players on the obverse encompassed by “World Junior Hockey Championships” and “Czechoslovakia 1986/87”, while the reverse has a raised maple leaf over crossed hockey sticks with “The maple leaf forever” above in raised letters. The original red and white ribbon is attached, with just very light handling wear to the medal itself.
