Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Exceptional panoramic photo by Toronto’s Alexandria Studio pictures the participants in the February 1934 benefit game to aid Leafs’ star Ace Bailey following his career-ending injury suffered the previous December in Boston. After Bailey recovered from the life-threatening injury - which involved Bruins’ defenceman Eddie Shore - the NHL board of governors decided to stage the special game between the Maple Leafs and the best of the rest of the league. This picture was clicked after lengthy pre-game ceremonies, and feature’s an “Alexander Studios Toronto” imprint along the bottom right. Cook, Shore, L. Conacher, Stewart and Ching Johnson are notables for the NHL team that also includes Morenz, Joliat and Charlie Gardiner. Hainsworth, Primeau, Jackson, Horner, Clancy, Day and Charlie Conacher are joined by Leafs’ brass Smythe, Selke and Irvin. The Leafs, by the way, won the penalty-less game 7-3.
Framed to full dimensions of roughly 11 ½” x 21 ½”, the photo appears to be in wonderful condition, with moderate wear to the original wood frame, especially along edges. Additional information regarding the game and line-up has been affixed to the reverse.
