The smallest town in history to win the Stanley Cup, or any major North American professional championship, the Kenora Thistles – or as they were officially known, the Thistles Hockey Club – were formed in 1894 when the community was still referred to as Rat Portage. The Thistles were admitted to the Manitoba and Northwest Hockey Association shorty after inception, and entered the second-tier intermediate level. By 1907 – despite having unsuccessfully challenged twice previously - as Manitoba league champions in 1906, the Thistles challenged the current Stanley Cup-champion Montreal Wanderers, with a two-game total-goal series taking place in January 1907, with Kenora winning the series, 12 goals to 8. An absolute treasure for collectors and a decisively important historical image to the sport, we have an extremely rare original framed presentation-sized cabinet photo of the 1907 Stanley Cup champion Kenora Thistles. At approx 10” x 13” and affixed to a 15” x 19” mount, the photo depicts the full club with the players listed beneath including legendary HOFers Art Ross- borrowed from Brandon and paid $1,000.00 for both matches, iconic Quebec Bulldog “Bad” Joe Hall, original HOF inductee Tom Phillips, hometown stars Si Griffis and Tom Hooper, and Billy McGimsie. Shuttered by famous Montreal photographer William Notman, his name appears on the lower right of the mount, with the photo framed to approx 18” x 23”. The image itself appears flawless, with minor wear visible to the mount including a touch of water staining over the lower left. When combining historical importance with condition, this is one of the greatest photos we have ever handled, with the only other example we have seen originating from the family of Russell Phillips.
