Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

Menacing the opposition with forays from his crease to intercept advancing players, Ron Hextall exhibited early that he wasn’t one to be messed with, with the superstar netminder especially skilled at both the physical aspect of the game and his controlled handling of the puck. A winner of 296 games in his National Hockey League career, offered here, we present these pads worn by Hextall as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers during the mid-1990s. Vaughn Legacy pillows that date to either the lockout shortened 1994-95 or 1995-96 seasons of play based on photographic evidence, the pads are found in a mostly black colourway with white accents observed throughout. Having had "Hextall 27" embroidered into the outside of each pad, the printed "Vaughn" and "Legacy" graphics over the faces of both pads are largely worn away from repeated use and age, with this apparent heavier on the left pad over the right one. Displaying with good game-use throughout via puck marks, scuffs and scratches over both faces, with additional use present over the inside and outside portions of both as well while a team repair is seen towards the outside edge of the middle knee roll on the right pad. Also showing fraying/material loss to the white leather accents around the tops and bottoms of both pads, the backside of each shows good use via sweat staining, dye transfers and pilling while all the straps and buckles on both pads are present and accounted for, except at the toes where the leather strap has gone missing. Additionally, it appears as though a sealer or protectant was applied to the edges around the boot channel which has hardened and flaked over time as well as turned a yellowish brown colour.
Finally, it appears as though Getty Image #72351732 (April 23rd, 1995 vs Buffalo) shows a match to some of the wear on the pads including the small dark puck mark at the top of the box on the outside of the right pad, some of puck marks in the bottom white box on the outside of the right pad, the wear to the "A" in Vaughn on the bottom outside roll of the right pad, the wear/creasing pattern in the outside roll of the left pad at the top and the wear in the white portion around the toe of Hextall's skate at the bottom of the left pad but these are not clear enough for us to call a conclusive photo-match.
