A standout with the Motor City Red Wings beginning after the Great Depression and continuing throughout the war years, Carl Liscombe was instrumental in Detroit capturing their third Stanley Cup championship in 1943, with his 14 post-season points tying a then-current record. Liscombe would go on to lead the AHL’s Providence Reds to the Calder Cup in 1949 after his NHL playing days, with the Perth native featured in his Reds uniform on this rarely-seen and aesthetically pleasing CCM die cut advertising display that originates from the late-1940s. At approx 11 ½” x 20" at the widest points and with an intact easel backing, Liscombe is depicted in black and white, with text beneath including CCM’s tag line, “The Joy of Amateurs… The Pride of Professionals”. Accompanying the display, we have a collection of 1930s CCM Photos envelopes (4), a 1934-35 Green Border Bruins team photo (framed) and early-1950s “Matched Sets” ad sheets (2).
The display survives in gorgeous condition, completely intact and original, with the easel back in place and operational, with just light wear overall. The main concerns are a large crease over the mid-section of Liscombe, along with some additional creasing over the top, and a small pinhole visible along the middle section. The CCM envelopes include 1932-33 (Grey Border), 1933-34 (Brown Border), 1934-35 (Green Border) and 1935-36 (Blue Border), with the Conacher promotional advertising sheet from 1933-34 also included. The Bruins Green Border photo has been set in an 11 1/2" x 13 1/2" frame, with just light wear visible. The “Matched Sets” sheets are for 1950-51 and 1951-52. The envelopes show moderate to heavier wear, while the Conacher sheet remains in high grade.
