Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Trailing only Gordie Howe for the most all-time points at the time of his retirement in 1981, Phil Esposito secured over 700 goals throughout his HOF career, with selection to the NHL First All-Star Team six times. A veteran of 1282 games played in his National Hockey League career who won a pair of Stanley Cup championships, a pair of Hart Memorial Trophies and five (5) Art Ross Trophies, Esposito would be the first NHL player to eclipse the 100 point plateau. Just the seventh (7th) player to have his number retired by the inaugural American club, Esposito spent nine (9) seasons in Beantown, totaling out to 625 games played. Originating as part of Esposito's personal collection, offered here is this banner given to the HOFer when he was honored during a pre-game ceremony at the old Boston Garden on December 3rd, 1987 before Boston's 4-3 win over the New York Rangers. At 39” in diameter, the circular nylon banner features Esposito's “7”, with “Philip A. Esposito” above and “1967-75” below, all in sewn-on single black twill letters/numbers, with the design repeated on the opposite side as well. Exhibiting just light wear including fold lines and the odd spot stain, an LOA signed by Esposito will accompany the piece. Of note, the banner is NOT the one that hung in the rafters of the Boston Garden and is just one that was presented to Phil by the Bruins franchise at the time of his retirement.
