Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
On February 27th, 2007, at Rexall Place, where the legendary story began, the Edmonton Oilers raised Mark Messier's royal blue and orange No. 11 to the rafters. In a stirring ceremony before the Oilers' 3-0 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes, Messier joined former Oilers greats Paul Coffey, Grant Fuhr, Wayne Gretzky, Allan Hamilton, and Jari Kurri who have also had their numbers retired by the franchise. This retro style jersey, worn during the first and second periods on "Mark Messier Night" by #71, Petr Sykora, is a size 56. The MeiGray patch on the inside hem states "NHL game-worn jersey 2006-2007 season D08480" and according to MeiGray's population report, the jersey is a "Blue Retro - Mark Messier Night w/#11 Patch - MGG Set (Period 1 & 2)" example. It is registered into the "Oilers/MGG Game Worn Jersey Authentication Program" with its inventory tag sewn into the hem and matching number (D08480) on the accompanying MeiGray LOA. There is an "Elite Sportswear" patch on the inside hem that states "Edmonston Oilers Set #1 Mark Messier Night 2006/2007" and a commemorative "Edmonton Oilers Mark Messier" patch resting on the right breast. The jersey includes some non-game-related stains on the Oiler's front logo and on the bottom.
