Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

Beginning his major-junior career in the Q with Granby in 1982-83, Patrick Roy lodged with a family in the southwestern Quebec town along with two other players, and wore the offered goal glove while playing with the Bisons in both 1982-83 and 1983-84 – according to the accompanying detailed letter of provenance. No stranger to superstition, Roy named the glove “Charlotte”, and it saw further use with the young superstar during training camp with the Montreal Canadiens in 1984-85 before being gifted upon his return to our consignor; the son of the family Roy was staying with in Granby, and at which point Patrick signed the wrist cuff adding “Charlotte I ‘84”. The glove has now been in our consignors possession since 1984. Getty Image #80563485 shows a young Roy wearing a #32 Montreal Canadiens jersey and using this model of glove, and we believe the photo originates from the 1984-85 Canadiens' training camp/pre-season in which Roy played some pre-season games. A new “Charlotte II” was then used during the 1984-85 season with Granby, with this corroborated by a video of Roy with the Bisons from 1984-85 that shows a different model. The glove was also displayed at the "Musee du Temple de la Renommee des Canadiens de Montreal" for a period of 7 years beginning in 2009, with documents relating to that fact along with a small sign used for display to accompany.
The D&R S4D model glove itself shows moderate use with surface wear throughout, with all of the lacing intact, with the signature quite faded.
