Named the best goaltender at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games backstopping his native Russia, Nikolai Khabibulin was originally drafted 204th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 1992 and went on to suit up for five (5) NHL teams during his career, including Winnipeg, Phoenix, Tampa Bay, Chicago and Edmonton. A winner of 333 National Hockey League games over the course of 18-seasons in the league, Khabibulin would also hoist Lord Stanley's Cup in 2004 as a member of the Tampa Bay Lighting. Following the Jets franchise to Phoenix when they relocated for the 1996-97 season, offered here is this Coyotes jersey worn by the man called "The Bulin Wall" at some point between 1997 and 1999. A heavyweight knit garment made by Starter, brand/Center Ice Authentic Collection labeling along with a size "60-G" size swatch are sewn into the inner collar while both the Starter and NHL shield logos have been embroidered into the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with a Coyotes team crest that features both textured and embroidered details throughout, both "Phoenix Coyotes" and "Goals For Kids" alternate logo patches that are both of similar design have been placed over both shoulders. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Khabibulin's number "35" dual layer maroon-over-green tackle twill numerals, "Khabibulin" is spelt out in matching style letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Exhibiting good game-wear, puck marks are present over the front and both sleeves, light pilling is found over the end of each sleeve near the cuffs from rubbing against Khabibulin's gloves. Sporting more pilling of a heavier variety on the interior of each cuff, sweat and spot staining is also observed throughout the interior and exterior of the jersey as well.
Void of any team tagging, the jersey is stated to have come from the collection of Coyotes head equipment manager, Stan Wilson. Additioanlly, the jersey also has a signature reading "Eddy Schulz" on the interior, who was the founder of Eddy goalie masks and a provider of masks to Khabibulin during his career with both Winnipeg/Phoenix. Of note, it is unclear as to if the jersey was signed on the inside by Schulz himself or by someone else as notation that the jersey was supposed to make it into Schulz's possession. A Letter of Provenance from our consignor will accompany the piece.
