A veteran of numerous clubs throughout his career, Nick Wasnie began his ascension to the big league by first appearing in a pair of season’s with his hometown Winnipeg Maroons in the mid-1920s before embarking on his initial NHL foray, skating in 16 games with the Chicago Black Hawks during the club’s sophomore season, in 1927-28. Additional seasoning would occur for the winger in the CAHL with both Newark and Quebec before three glorious seasons spent with the most famous hockey team on earth, the Montreal Canadiens. Wasnie would appear in over 150 games for the Habs (including playoffs), helping the powerhouse squad to both their third and fourth world championships, in 1930 and 1931 respectively. Wasnie would later move on to the New York Americans and the short-lived St. Louis Eagles before hanging up his skates after a final AHA season with the Kansas City Greyhounds in 1939-40.
Originally obtained from the family of Nick Wasnie, we are pleased to be able to offer to the collecting community his Montreal Canadiens sweater worn during his successful tenure with the legendary club, and amazingly, it’s been photo-matched! Currently void of labeling, the historic wool garment feature’s the instantly recognizable and sacred “CH” team crest administered in felt over felt construction, with a second example in matching material affixed to the middle striping band section of the left sleeve. A large and thick felt “6” has been sewn to the verso, with thin blue and red striping bands utilized over the cuffs and just above the bottom hem to compliment the familiar sleeve and mid-section striping accents. Wear to the team crest with small attached sections separated on the left and right side has occurred, with a few small holes present over each sleeve, the front and the shoulders. Team repairs are also visible, with examples on the reverse and over each sleeve.
Regarding the previously mentioned photo-match, the particularities of the team crest and its placement have been matched to Wasnie’s image on the 1929-30 Montreal Canadiens team photo, with each crest uniquely placed and hand sewn. A ghost image of our team crest has also been superimposed over the team-photo crest, showing perfect placement between the pair, with these numeric images included. Wasnie wore the number “6” for each of his three seasons with Montreal. Hailing from a Stanley Cup championship season, this early Habs sweater stands as one of the rarest and most desirable extant. A Classic LOA will accompany, and please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
