Dr. J, the one and only Julius Erving, led the New York Nets to their first American Basketball Association championship in 1973-74. Erving, who was named on all 50 ballots in voting for the ABA All-Time Team on the 30th anniversary of the league’s founding, took 1974 ABA Playoffs MVP honors after leading the Nets to a 4-1 series win in the finals. “Erving” is arched across the top of the left shank of this 1973-74 Nets ABA championship 10-karat gold salesman’s sample ring, which has a zirconia set in the middle of the tableau and weighs approximately 35 grams. Wonderfully preserved, it has “10K” and sample number “7223-0” stamped inside the size 11 band.
The ring displays sharp details with only light surface scratches, mostly on the back of the band.
“World Champions NY Nets” is spelled out in raised gold letters on the outer edge of the oval tableau, which features a tri-tone basketball in the middle with red and blue enamel paint above and below the large solitary zirconia set in the middle.
The Nets logo and the ABA crest are on the left shank below Dr. J’s surname, and the right shank displays “1974” arched across the top with a shield stamped below it with the results of New York’s three 1974 playoff series wins, 4-1 over the Virginia Squires in the Eastern Division Semifinals, 4-0 over the Kentucky Colonels in the Division Finals, and 4-1 over the Utah Stars in the ABA Finals, along with the “111-100” final score in the Game 5 championship clincher.
Ervin, who averaged 27.9 points per game in the 1974 ABA Playoffs, won two ABA championships with the Nets (1974 and 1976) and an NBA championship with Philadelphia in 1983. He is a member of both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (1993) and the Basketball National College Basketball Hall of Fame (2006).
