The paint job on this mask by Lefebvre identifies it as a Martin Brodeur New Jersey Devils mask. According to our consignor this mask was gifted to him directly by Brodeur in the late-1990s/early-2000s when the Devils played the Canadiens in Montreal. The consignor was a very close friend of the Brodeur family, he had met Martin Brodeur on numerous occasions and Marty had actually given him many other items including game-used pads, game-used gloves and a game-worn jersey. Our research shows that Brodeur wore a similar mask in circa 1999 with a slightly different painted flame pattern on the side, but without "Heaton" on the sides. “Pour/For: M.Brodeur, Par/By: Lefebvre 01-99” label sticker is applied inside the right chin, with a “Made in Canada” sticker on the left chin. Padding remains inside and the straps are in place through the painted back plate, with Marty’s Number “30” and the initials of his children painted on it. Comes with an LOA from the gentleman who was gifted the mask by Brodeur.
During that time period, the Devils played in Montreal on April 10th 1999, Dec. 16th 1999 and Feb. 24th 2000. According to our consignor, he recalls Brodeur mentioning to him that he had worn the mask in at least the warm-up and that according to our consignor he even wore the mask driving back home after the game and that the mask was all wet.
The shellac coating over the paint job that appears all over the mask is not apparent over the two Stanley Cups painted on the back plate. Martin had won one Stanley Cup when this mask was made in 1999.
