Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
A veteran of 1756 National Hockey League contests over the course of a career that spanned a total of twenty-five (25) seasons, Mark Messier would win a total of six (6) Stanley Cup's and be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007. The last active player to have played in the rival league of the World Hockey Association and also the last active player to have suited up during the 1970s, Messier would play in a total of sixteen (16) NHL All-Star Games during his time spent in the league. One of the greatest leaders in NHL history, offered here is this Wales Conference jersey worn by Messier during the 1992 NHL All-Star Game that was hosted in Philadelphia by the Flyers. Made by CCM and featuring "Center Ice Authentic Collection", size "54" and Maska Ultrafil labels all affixed to the inner collar, both the CCM and NHL shield logos have been embroidered into the reverse hem. An imitation of the style worn during the first NHL All-Star Game in 1947, the front of the jersey is decorated with an NHL shield crest that has been administered in layered tackle twill style while the NHL's 75th anniversary patch has been added over the right breast. Sporting the distinguished alternate captain's "A" over the left breast and styled over the reverse with Messier's number "11" in single layer blue twill numbers, "Messier" is spelt out in matching style across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Signed and dated by Messier on the interior behind the front crest with a black marker ink signature that displays without issue, the jersey retains its original fight strap on the interior and shows game-wear via a couple of light marks over the front and another over the right sleeve while some spot staining exists throughout which is heaviest over the left sleeve near the cuff. Finally, there is also some sweat staining on the inside of the collar.
Also showing a minor amount of fraying from wear around the interior seams at both armpits, the jersey comes accompanied by an LOA from Spirit of the Game which states that the jersey was acquired from a former NHL trainer and that it was confirmed by a trainer that worked the game that most of the real game jerseys were signed on the interior behind the crest. Additionally, it is also listed in the LOA that that point was confirmed by a CCM representative that also worked the game and was in charge of the game jerseys.
Finally, Getty Image #55748490 (January 18th, 1992 - 1992 NHL All-Star Game) appears to show a match to the placement of the nameplate over the upper reverse in correlation to the numbers below it but the image is not clear enough to call it a definitive photo-match.
