The brainchild of Alan Eagleson and held on five (5) occasions between 1976 and 1991, the Canada Cup was created to meet demand for a true world championship that allowed the best players from participating nations to compete regardless of their status as professional or amateur. Seeing Team Canada claim the tournaments crown in 1976, 1984, 1987 and 1991, the Soviet Union would be the only other winner, winning the second edition of the tournament in 1981. Offered here, we present this lot consisting of ten (10) Canada Cup game and souvenir pucks. Dating from the 1981 (x2 - one game puck and one souvenir puck), 1984 (x1 - game puck) and 1991 (x7 - souvenir pucks), the game pucks from 1981 and 1984 both feature tournament logos over their fronts while the reverse of the 1981 offering sports a CCM logo and the 1984 example is blank. With both pucks themselves in overall good condition with some light surface and handling wear seen over both, the logo on the 1984 puck is partially worn at the top and bottom while the logos on either side of the 1981 puck also both show some minor wear as well. For the souvenir puck from the 1981 tournament, blank on the reverse and sporting a printed large logo on the front, light surface wear is seen over the logo while the slug itself is free from major wear except for a shallow cut in the middle of the reverse. Finally, all the pucks from 1991 sport printed tournament logos over the front which include the Labatt sponsorship as well. All also blank on the reverse, all remain in overall good condition with light surface wear observed throughout except for one which is heavily worn down around the top and bottom edges.
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. He was awarded the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019.
