Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Both featuring checklists that sport a staggering 660-cards in all and hailing from years that saw the Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees claim World Series championships, the 1976 Major League Baseball season was the last season of the expansion era (dating back to 1961) until 1993 in which the American League (AL) and the National League (NL) had the same number of teams while the 1977 campaign saw the introduction of the Toronto Blue Jays, Canada's second Major League team, into the American League. Offered here, we present this lot consisting of complete sets of Topps' 1976 and 1977 baseball releases.
Starting with the 1976 assembly, made up mostly of cards presenting in the condition neighborhood of VG to VG-EX throughout its entirety, it is worth noting that four (4) of the five (5) main series checklist cards have been marked and that six (6) of the team checklist cards are marked as well. Additionally, card #441, Gary Carter's first solo card, is creased, while a few others have ink on them. For the key cards, included are those of 1-Aaron RB (PR to F - heavy crease), 19-Brett (VG to VG-EX - 2nd year card - corner wear), 98-Eckersley RC (VG-EX to EX - light surface wear), 240-Rose (G to VG - large ding at top left corner), 300-Bench (VG to VG-EX - ding at top left corner), 316-Yount (GOOD - off-center at the top - top border wear - 2nd year card), 330-Ryan (VG-EX to EX - slightly off-center), 345-Ruth ATS (VG to VG-EX - right border dent), 400-Carew (VG to VG-EX - corner wear), 480-Schmidt (FR to G - damage to the top right and bad corners), 500-Jackson (GOOD - corner wear), 550-Aaron (GOOD - crease that shows on the reverse), 599-Guidry RC (PR - damage at the top right) and 600-Seaver (VG-EX to EX - slight corner wear).
For the 1977 set, the group is seen as being in the overall uniform condition ranges of about VG-EX to EX and EX throughout its entirety. Including a quintet of unmarked checklist cards, the key cards include the examples of 10-Jackson (VG to VG-EX - small crease in the word "Yankees"), 120-Carew (EX to EX-MT), 140-Schmidt (EX to EX-MT), 150-Seaver (VG-EX to EX - slight corner wear), 170-Munson (VG-EX to EX - surface "print" wear), 234-Ryan RB (EX - faded surface), 450-Rose (VG-EX to EX - small surface bubble), 473-Dawson RC (EX to EX-MT), 580-Brett (EX to EX-MT - tiny round print marks along the right border), 635-Yount (EX to EX-MT) and 650-Ryan (FR to G - off-center and top left corner is damaged). With other non listed stars of both sets in a condition that is consistent with the cards listed above, don't miss out on this one for your vintage baseball collection!
