Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
The key card of the 1986-86 O-Pee-Chee and Topps releases, the first year cardboard of Patrick Roy leads the way in both importance and value for both sets. A 20-year old Quebec City native who grew up a fan of the Nordiques, Roy keyed the Montreal Canadiens return to Stanley Cup glory in the spring of 1986 with Patrick's heroics earning him his first of three (3) Conn Smythe Trophy awards as playoff MVP and came a year after he had backstopped the Sherbrooke Canadiens to the Calder Cup, emblematic of American Hockey League supremacy. Offered here, we present this lot that includes copies of Roy's 1986-87 O-Pee-Chee and Topps rookie cards that have been signed by the 2006 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee. Pictured over the front of both cards in the same action image, both cards have been signed over the front by Roy with blue marker ink signatures, with the one on the Topps card done in a thinner marker and displaying with some minor fading while the signature on the O-Pee-Chee card displays without issue. With the signatures on both cards authenticated by PSA (O-Pee-Chee) and Beckett (Topps) respectively, the signature on the O-Pee-Chee card has earned a grade of "10" from PSA while the Beckett authenticated one is ungraded. Of note, neither card itself have been given a technical grade though both show light corner and edge wear as well as centering issues. Both housed in either PSA or Beckett holders, both remain in excellent condition with minor imperfections that are worth noting for accuracy.
