Likely the greatest natural goal scorer the game of hockey has ever seen throughout its expansive history, Mike Bossy would first gain notoriety while playing with the Laval National of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and would be drafted twice in 1977, once at 15th overall by the National Hockey League's New York Islanders and once at 44th overall by the Indianapolis Racers of the rival World Hockey Association. Choosing the route of the NHL, Bossy would go on to play a total of 752 games in the league over the course of ten (10) seasons, all in the uniform of the Islanders, and helped them to four (4) straight Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983, claiming the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1982 also. Potting a total of 573 goals across his time in the league and holding the NHL record for the most consecutive fifty (50) goal seasons with nine (9) straight fruitful campaigns, Bossy would retire from the game after the 1986-87 season and go on to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
Answering the call of his country on a pair of occasions to participate in the best-on-best Canada Cup tournaments in 1981 and 1984, Bossy's second go round in the red and white of Team Canada would be more memorable than the first as he would score the overtime winning goal of the semi-final against the Soviet Union to set up a best-of-three (3) final series against Sweden, whom Bossy and Canada would sweep away in two (2) games. Choosing to trade jerseys at the end of the final contest with Sweden's Patrick Sundstrom, offered here, and hailing directly from Sundstrom's personal collection, is this white Team Canada jersey worn by Bossy throughout the 1984 Canada Cup that has been both photo-matched and video-matched to various points of the tournamnent, including Game Two (2) of the finals against Sweden.
A CCM made offering that is void of any tagging affixed to the inner collar but measuring out to roughly a size "50", a CCM logo patch sits affixed over the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with a rubberized Team Canada crest and sleeve emblems that remain in excellent condition with just a bit of light cracking observed at the bottom of the logo that graces the front of the patriotic garment, the verso has been accented with Bossy's number "22" in single layer red tackle twill numerals. Having had "Bossy" spelt out in matching style red twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate, the jersey displays incredible game-wear throughout its entirety including heavy dark stick marks and coloured board paint transfers throughout the body and sleeves plus good pilling on the interior and atop of both shoulders. Retaining its original ribbon style fight strap on the interior, light board burns are observed over both sleeves as well along with sweat staining and general filth from use throughout while a slash mark and small unrepaired hole are viewed over the left sleeve also.
Regarding the photo match, the jersey is matched to an image of Bossy and Wayne Gretzky that shows many of the stick marks over the right sleeve and lower front while another image, taken during one of the Sweden contests, is matched to the large black stick mark over the right elbow. For the video-match, screenshot taken from footage of Game Two (2) of the finals against Sweden, showing Bossy on the bench, is matched to the dark stick marks on the backside of the left shoulder. Hailing from Sundstrom's personal collection, his LOA will accompany the piece.
