Proclaiming themselves as World Champions in 1904 due to their pair of wins over the Canadian based Montreal Wanderers, the Portage Lakes Hockey Club was one of the first, if not the first outright, professional hockey club in the world. Operating from 1904 to 1907 and playing in the International Professional Hockey League during that time, the club won championships in 1906 and 1907 and sports an alumni list that includes players like Cyclone Taylor, Riley Hern, Joe Hall, Fred Lake and Bruce Stewart. Offered here, and picturing that historically important club, is this photo display of the 1904 edition of the Portage Lake Club that hails from the archives of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Measuring 24" x 34 1/2", the piece sports an image on the club over the front with information pertaining to their 1904 "World Championship" and other history underneath. Made of foam board and displaying with light even toning over the entire front, damage is seen to the edges, corners and surface of the piece, heaviest at the top two (2) corners, as well as some light straining. Featuring a partially detached metal wire for hanging on the reverse, numerous spots of glue and glue reside are also present as well.
