Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024

Always a popular target for Hockey Canada when they sent out invitations for a number of late-season international tournaments throughout the 1980s and 1990s, especially since he had donned Team Canada's storied red and white colours at all four (4) Canada Cups and the 1982 IIHF World Championships, Wayne Gretzky would usually be unavailable to the national team due to common lengthy playoff runs. Regardless, the team's training staff, in a long-standing tradition and in hopes that "The Great One" would accept the offer, always placed their uniform orders with an extra set of number "99" uniforms. Offered here, we present this Team Canada jersey from the early-1990s made up for Gretzky in case of his participation, likely for either the Spengler Cup or Izvestia Cup tournaments of the era. A lightweight mesh construction garment made by Adidas, a plain "XL" size tag with washing instructions on the reverse is affixed to the inner collar while Adidas' famed three (3) stripes are found over each arm. Decorated over the front with a screened on Team Canada crest, the same crest is found in repeating style down both sides while an Adidas logo is present over the right breast. Having had mesh sponsorship badges sewn on over the left breast, lower front and lower reverse, the sleeves and verso have been decorated with Gretzky's famed number "99" in screened on red or white numbers while "Gretzky" is spelt out in sublimated white letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Remaining in excellent condition with no game-wear since it was never worn, the jersey shows just a bit of staining/toning through the nameplate at the upper reverse.
