Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
Originating from the 1944-45 NHL season, which witnessed the Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Detroit Red Wings in a low-scoring seven game Stanley Cup final with five of the games featuring shut-outs, we offer deceased HOFer King Clancy's signed NHL referee's contract, along with an additional pair of handwritten and signed letters from Clancy also from the 1944-45 season. First, the typed contract for the 1944-45 season called for Clancy to be paid $75.00 per game (just over $1,300.00 in 2024 dollars) and no less than $3,000.00 for the season (just over $52,000.00 in 2024 dollars). Clancy has signed in black ink, with a secretarial signature for league president Red Dutton. There is also a cover letter to the contract, with this not original but a period copy (the cover letter has toning, and the contract also sports toning on the right side and bottom from it's longtime storage in a duotang). The additional letters are smaller fold-over affairs both handwritten, with one addressed to Red Dutton and signed the full "Frank King Clancy", while the second is addressed to Dutton's secretary "Miss Pinard" and signed simply "King". The content of the letter addressed to Dutton regards the details of the offered contract.
