This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/26/2024
A Canadian-American businessman, operating companies in the grain and cattle industries, and owner of the Detroit Red Wings, James E. Norris - usually recognized as James Norris Sr. - also had significant ownership interests in the Chicago Black Hawks and the New York Rangers. Passing most of his holdings on to his son James D., Norris was elected to the HOF in 1958, with the James Norris Memorial Trophy named in his honour. Norris passed away in 1952. This lot includes a collection of 5 documents dated Nov 4, 1944 (1) and Nov 8, 1944 (4), including a typed letter on Norris Grain Company letterhead signed by Norris. First, the letter signed by Norris in black ink is addressed to NHL president Red Dutton, and it mentions Dit Clapper cutting a player just above the eye, with Norris not happy with the call referee King Clancy made - further stating that he doesn't care for King and would prefer if he didn't referee games. The additional documents are typed, and include a re-typed copy of the first letter, with a secretarial Norris signature, a letter from Dutton to Clancy (unsigned), another letter to King from presumably Dutton (unsigned), and a two-page letter to Norris presumably from Dutton (unsigned). A few of the letters have notations along with toning, while the Norris signed letter sports fold lines.
