Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024

Consisting of Connie Mack's famous "$100,000 infield" that featured pitchers Eddie Plank and "Chief" Bender along with "Stuffy" McInnis (first base), Eddie Collins (second base), Jack Barry (shortstop), and "Home Run" Baker (third base), the Philadelphia Athletics finished 13 1/2 games ahead of the second-place Detroit Tigers in 1911. The A's met the New York Giants in the World Series, with this New York's first of three consecutive appearances at the Fall Classic. The series went five games, with Philadelphia claiming the first of two consecutive world championships. This rare pin with attached American flag ribbon celebrates the champs as 1911 World Series winners. Featuring the same design as a souvenir plate well known to collectors from the same season, the 2 1/4" pin feature's the famous white elephant, with cameo images of twenty-two team members including Bender, Baker, Coombs, Plank, Collins, Mack and others. While condition leaves much to be desired, the pin exhibits staining around the perimeter, with a crack to the celluloid and heavy oxidation/rusting to the reverse. The ribbon is also slightly tattered, but it remains firmly attached. Given the rarity of the pin, with only two or three known when it last sold in 2013, the condition issues can be forgiven.
