Part of the famed "Original Six", the New York Rangers have won a total of four (4) Stanley Cup's in their nearly 100-years of NHL play, with the most recent coming in 1994 over the Vancouver Canucks. The 2023-24 Presidents Trophy winners and a club that has had some of the best players in the game wear their patriotic red, white and blue colours, offered here is this Rangers practice jersey that dates to the late-1990s which has been signed by and attributed to have been worn by "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky, after his last practice in Edmonton before his retirement in 1999.
Coming with excellent provenance, our consignor's story goes that Wayne wanted to see him at the old Northlands Coliseum after he and the Rangers were done practice. Upon arrival, he was told that Mike Fogla, the head equipment manager for New York, wanted him to go to the dressing room to meet up with Wayne. Gretzky would end up getting busy signing items in the old Edmonton dressing room and Mike gave our consignor this practice jersey said to have been worn by Wayne on-ice just prior to our consignors arrival and had him sign it as our consignor had to return to work.
Red in colour and made by CCM, both size "58" and "Made in Canada" labels are affixed to the inner collar while both the CCM and NHL shield logos have been embroidered into the reverse hem. Also showing additional embroidered CCM and size "58" designations over the front hem, the front of the garment is decorated with New York's "Lady Liberty" alternate logo crest that features embroidered details throughout while an NHL Center Ice patch has been added over the right breast. Void of any numbering and still featuring its fight strap on the interior, Gretzky has signed underneath the collar with a large black marker ink signature that displays without issue.
Showing light use via some dark stick marks over the lower front, images of Gretzky dated to his final Rangers practice on April 17th, 1999, a day before the final game of his career, show him wearing the same style and colour of jersey. A JSA Auction LOA will accompany the piece for the autograph as will a letter of provenance from our consignor outlining their story about acquiring the jersey.
