Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Always a hit with collectors, appreciated for their beautiful oversized condition-sensitive images and scarce survival rate, Montreal’s La Presse issued newsprint photos of the greatest hockey stars of the day over a period of five seasons, spanning from 1927-28 to 1931-32. Profiling athletes of the day from a multitude of sports with an 11” x 17” newsprint photo in each Saturday edition, offered here we present this near complete set of "La Presse" photos. Including seventy (70) of the seventy-two (72) examples that make up the checklist, the group includes key HOFers such as Morenz, Joliat, Vezina, Shore, Conacher Bros, Clancy, Primeau, Thompson and numerous others. Featuring hockey, boxing, cycling, football, figure skating, swimming, baseball and other sports, each issue is approx 11” x 17” while the set is missing only those of the April 26th, 1930 image of the Montreal Canadiens team photo and the March 19th, 1932 example picturing William Cockburn of the Winnipeg Hockey Club that was the 1931 Allen Cup Champion and 1932 Olympic gold medalist while representing Canada. With the best of the bunch including pictures of Howie Morenz, Aurel Joliat, Sylvio Mantha, George Hainsworth, Georges Vezina, Eddie Shore and Lionel Conacher from 1927-28 as well as 1928-29 images of Nels Stewart, Babe Siebert, Clint Benedict, Red Dutton, Frank Boucher, George Boucher and Bun Cook, the back half of the near set in terms of the years that they were release features the likes of King Clancy, Joe Primeau, Tiny Thompson and Hooley Smith from 1929-30, Red Horner, Harvey Jackson, Charlie Conacher and Ebbie Goodfellow from 1930-31 and Chuck Gardiner from 1931-32. Also including a February 16th, 1946 image of Maurice "The Rocket" Richard, most of the images appear in excellent condition for their age, carefully cut (for the most part) from the papers that they were included with while some show torn edges along with flaws such as small edge rips, wrinkles and creases. With most of the pictures measuring out to their full dimensions, a small portion (4 images in total) are lightly trimmed on their edges including the examples of Hap Day (1928-29), Lucien Brunet (1928-29), Hec Kilrea (1929-30) and Tiny Thompson (1929-30). Additionally, seventeen (17) of the photos in the group have tape repairs including Morenz (1927-28), Mantha (1927-28), Hainsworth (1927-28), Conacher (1927-28), Porter (1927-28), Stewart (1928-29), Boucher (1928-29), Mondou (1928-29), Cook (1928-29), Kilrea (1929-30) Hitchman (1929-30), Miller (1930-31), Gottselig (1930-31), Kerr (1930-31 - small piece), Saint-Germain (1930-31 - 1 piece), Goodfellow (1930-31 - 1 piece) and Owen (1931-32) while the photos of Roche and Hays from 1930-31 both have fold lines that are worth mentioning for accuracy. Of note, some of the tape marks have bled through from the backs to the fronts and the image of Babe Seibert is the only one still affixed to the full paper.
