Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
O-Pee-Chee was back with a 264-card effort for 1986-87 and the Oilers were back on top of the hockey world at season’s end after the Canadiens’ Stanley Cup victory a year earlier. The heroic efforts of playoff MVP Patrick Roy (and his ensuing formidable career) have made Saint Patrick’s rookie card the focal point of OPC’s ’86-87 set, with the example here found in the range of EX-MT with a light ding at the bottom right corner's border area just before the corner. For the remaining 263-cards making up the rest of the highly desirable assembly, the group is found to be in an overall high-grade range of EX-MT to NM including the key cards of #3 picturing Wayne Gretzky, #122 of Mario Lemieux and #149, the rookie card of Wendel Clark. Also featuring EX-MT cards of 11-Yzerman (tiny dent at the top right) and 186-Messier (x2 - both with very small amounts of corner wear), John Vanbiesbrouck's rookie card, found at #9 in the checklist, falls into the scope of EX to EX-MT with light corner wear at the bottom right. Also including hand cut box front card of Roy that is in the scope of EX to EX-MT, the blank back card of the rookie superstar shows a small amount of the next card at the right border. Additionally, the set is also a complete 16-card box bottoms set, it is worth noting that the Lemieux example is cut shorter than the others. Finally, extra cards are included in the form of Topps specimens picturing Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky that are found at #3 and #122 in that set's respective checklist with both in the neighbourhood of EX to EX-MT with the Lemieux having very light corner wear and the Gretzky a small ding/wear at the bottom right. Overall, a pleasing set with the other stars present in the checklist in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the assembly.
