Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
A decade that saw only the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers win Lord Stanley’s coveted Cup, offered here is this classic trio of mid-to-late-1970s O-Pee-Chee hockey releases from 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1978-79. Starting with the ’76-77 ensemble, the 396-card checklist is paced by the RC of Bryan Trottier with this particular copy of card #115 displaying in the condition range of VG to VG-EX due to ink bleed at the corner as well as corner wear in general. For the rest of the set, presenting in the overall condition ranges of VG to VG-EX on average with many of the included cards showing ink bleed on the corners and borders, the key cards include 22-Salming (EX to EX-MT - tiny elastic mark), 70-Clark (VG to VG-EX - corner wear), 116-Checklist (EX to EX-MT - unmarked), 163-Lafleur (G to VG - corner wear), 200-Dryden (VG to VG-EX - light corner wear), 213-Orr (G to VG - corner ink bleed and wear), 258-Checklist (VG to VG-EX - light bend at the top left and unmarked) and 377-Checklist (EX to EX-MT - unmarked). Additionally, the team checklist cards found from #132 and #149 are all unmarked.
For the '77-'78 release, lacking any real star rookie cards, presents in the overall condition range of VG-EX to EX with the checklist cards (#68, #249 and #381) all remaining in an unmarked state. For the key cards, included are the examples of 100-Dryden (G to VG - off-center and corner wear), 115-Clarke (VG-EX to EX - small ding at the top right corner), 200-Lafleur (FR - paper residue on the reverse and corner wear) and 251-Orr (VG-EX to EX - light corner wear). Additionally, like the earlier '76-'77 release, the team checklist cards that fall between #'s 71 and 88 are all found in their original unmarked state while the rest of the star players are found to be in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set.
Finally, for the 1978-79 assembly, in the overall condition range of VG-EX to EX and EX to EX-MT throughout, the set is paced by the rookie card of Mike Bossy, which is found in the low-grade condition range of FR to G due to being creased. Also including an EX to EX-MT example of Bossy's rookie record breaker card as the first card in the set, other notable key cards are those of 50-Dryden (G to VG - corner wear), 90-Lafleur (EX to EX-MT - 90-10 centering), 143-Federko RC (G to VG - tiny crease at the top left), 300-Orr (VG to VG-EX - corner wear and off-center), 330-Dryden AS (VG-EX to EX) and 353-Taylor RC (VG-EX to EX - corner wear). Lastly, both the checklist and team checklist cards are all in their original unmarked state.
