All featuring checklists that consist of 374 cards, the O-Pee-Chee baseball sets of 1979, 1980 and 1981 are also all considered to be abridgements of the Topps counterparts released south of the border while also sporting both French and English text for the Canadian market. All sporting a higher number of Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos players than what is found in the Topps sets, offered here is this trio of complete O-Pee-Chee baseball releases from 1979, 1980 and 1981.
Starting with the 1979 set, found to be in an overall uniform condition range of EX-MT, some the cards have minor corner wear mostly at the top left point. Led by the set's key rookie card of Ozzie Smith that is found in the range of EX-MT to NM condition and is well centred, a rarity for OPC baseball releases, the card is joined by other EX-MT to NM scope cards of 157-Munson (last card), 167-Brett and 179-Dawson. With EX to EX-MT cards found for 51-Ryan (minor corner wear), 323-Schmidt (tiny ding top left) and 343-Rose (small ding top left), other notables are found in the form cards #270 of Gary Carter and #338 of Eddie Murray, both around the range of EX condition with small top left corner dings, as well as a GOOD vicinity copy of card #374 picturing Reggie Jackson that sports a crease and a poor top left corner. With the set's three (3) checklist cards all unmarked, checklist #242 has a ding to the top left corner while the team checklists of the Blue Jays and Expos also presenting in an original unmarked state as well. Additionally, the other star players found in the release present in a condition range that is consistent with the rest of the set.
For the 1980 release, seen as being in an overall condition range of EX-MT to NM, many of the cards have the OPC rough cut edges that their releases of this era are hampered by. Including EX-MT to NM cards of 37-Carter, 55-Bench, 88-Murray, 122-Winfield, 124-Dawson, 139-Yount, 141-Schmidt, 205-Smith (2nd card), 282-Rose (60-40 centering), 303-Ryan, 314-Jackson (80-20 centering), 353-Carew and 365-Yastrzemski, the card of George Brett, found at #235 in the checklist, is seen as being in a GOOD condition range due to a damaged surface. Sporting unmarked checklists, the set's other star players are found to be in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the release. Finally, for the 1981 set, also seen as being in a uniform condition range of EX-MT to NM despite the typically seen OPC centering issues affecting many of the cards, the key cards include those of 6-Carter, 39-Murray (60-40 centering), 113-Brett, 125-Dawson (70-30 centering), 136-Raines RC, 180-Rose (70-30 centering), 207-Schmidt, 240-Ryan, 286-Bench (90-10 centering top-to-bottom), 315-Gibson RC (90-10 centering), 347-Baines RC, and 370-Jackson (small amount of wax staining). Also including EX to EX-MT cards of 4-Yount (completely off-center) and 261-Henderson (1st OPC card - heavy diamond cut), the checklist cards all remain unmarked and the set's other stars are in a condition consistent with the rest of the included offerings. Overall a strong trio of classic baseball offerings waiting for their new home in your all-important collection!
