Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
A classic trio of card sets featuring the men who helped write the seven-season history of the World Hockey Association is up for grabs here, led chronologically by a 66-card set from 1974-75 which is led numerically by “The Howes” card. Found largely in a fairly uniform condition range of VG-EX on average with some VG-EX to EX examples throughout as well, many of the cards making up the assembly are affected by general corner wear that comes from handling and age. Led condition wise by EX to EX-MT cards of 17-Hedberg, 50-Hull (light wax stain) and 64-Plante (light corner wear), the previously mentioned lead off card titled "The Howes" is seen as being in VG-EX to EX shape with a ding to its top border worth mentioning for accuracy. Finally, the key's are rounded out by a VG-EX to EX copy of card #30 picturing Gerry Cheevers over the front that has light corner wear and a VG to VG-EX vicinity copy of card #40 of Frank Mahovlich that has light damage to the top border.
Skipping ahead to the set released by O-Pee-Chee during the 1976-77 season, the 132-card effort is generally seen as falling into a uniform condition scope of VG-EX throughout. With many of the cards displaying with centering issues that hampered many of the O-Pee-Chee releases of the era, condition leaders include the examples of 117-Checklist (unmarked - 85-15 centering) at EX-MT and 95-Mark Howe (80-20 centering) at EX to EX-MT. Also including EX vicinity cards of 72-Howe AS (80-20 centring) and 100-Hull (slight diamond cut), the keys are concluded by VG-EX to EX specimens of 50-Howe (completely off-center) and 65-Hull AS (completely off-center). With the final set included being that of OPC's 1977-78 release, the smaller 66-card release featured here is seen as being in the fairly uniform condition range of EX to EX-MT with a few better off at NM as well. Lead by key cards of 50-Hull and 58-Checklist (unmarked - small bump right border) both in the proximity of EX-MT to NM, the first card in the set of Gordie Howe presents a bit worse off, in the range of G to VG condition due to a stain over the front right side. Overall a pleasing lot for those looking to add some vintage cardboard of the rival league to their all-important collections!
