Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
A classic duo of early-to-mid-1970s O-Pee-Chee hockey assemblies are up for grabs in this lot via complete sets of the company's releases from 1973-74 and 1974-75. Featuring checklists of 264 and 396 cards respectively and starting with the earlier of the two (2) sets, the 1973-74 release, made up of colourfully bordered and condition sensitive cards, is seen as being in an overall uniform condition range of VG to VG-EX with some a bit worse off. Seeming to sport general corner wear throughout and a mix of both dark and light reverses, it is worth mentioning that the checklists are both in poor condition. Featuring the six (6) rookie cards of Bill Barber, Billy Smith, Dave Schultz, Bob Nystrom, Larry Robinson and Terry O'Reilly throughout the set, those of Smith (light back - corner wear), Schultz (corner wear) and Robinson (corner wear) are all seen as being in the range of VG to VG-EX condition while Barber (corner wear and dings) and Nystrom (corner wear and light surface scratch on reverse) are in the proximity of G to VG. With the last first-year card of Terry O'Reilly in the vicinity of GOOD condition and displaying corner wear and dings while being off-center, the notable star card of Guy Lafleur presents around VG-EX to EX with light corner wear while Bobby Orr's card found at #30 in the set is in the range of VG to VG-EX, also with light corner wear and a very small dent at the right border. Rounding out the keys, card #50 of Bobby Clarke is found in FR to G condition and shows both elastic marks and water stains as well as a crease.
For the 1974-75 set, featuring the rookie cards of three well-known coaches and six now Hall of Fame players that have always contributed to the sets popularity, the group is seen as being in the overall uniform condition range of VG to VG-EX with the cards showing general corner wear. With the coach cards of 21-Shero and 161-Cherry in the scope of VG-EX to EX and both showing light corner wear, the Shero example shows 60-40 centering while the Cherry is hampered by a wax stain. Rounded out by the card of Scotty Bowman in the vicinity of VG condition due to wax stains, corner wear and 90-10 centering, the first-year cardboard of Lanny McDonald leads the way at VG-EX to EX despite some corner wear while those of 180-Salming (dinged bottom corners) and 316-Shutt (bottom left corner ding) present as VG to VG-EX. Concluding the rookies with Bob Gainey (VG-EX - corner wear) and Denis Potvin (VG - corner wear/damage and completely off-center), card #100 rounds out the key cards as an EX example with is completely off-center from top-to-bottom on the reverse. For the checklists, #54 is around VG to VG-EX and unmarked by miscut and is joined by #311 in the same condition scope despite being marked and off-center. Finished off with the final checklist, #162 in G to VG shape and sporting marks plus light creases, the set includes four (4) other Orr leaders or All-Star cards. Of note, the Montreal team checklist card is marked and the other cards of star players are in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set.
