Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023

Numerous Wayne Gretzky aficionados and serious/advanced collectors who often/usually respond “I got it” when offered scarce pieces involving The Great One will likely not be able to do so here, with a double uncut sheet of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee cards, featuring Wayne’s iconic rookie card, sure to excite. “Rare” is an over-used word but some will rate it appropriate with regards to this fantastic find, the famous Gretz RC located in the second (horizontal) row and fourth from the right edge of the 132-card sheet on the righthand side of the shocker. As you can see, team cards and League Leader cards, along with legends Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull contribute to Wayne’s “side” and we’re pleased to report that most cards, including the Gretzky RC, are free of creases. The “left” sheet includes Ken Dryden, Guy Lafleur, Bob Gainey and Montreal’s Big Three (Savard, Lapointe, Robinson) who were four-time defending Stanley Cup champions when ’79-80 OPCs were first offered, while Mike Bossy’s second-year card also contributes. Measuring out to roughly 57" x 43", the sheet remains in admirable condition with creasing seen mostly around the left side, particularly near the middle and the bottom corner, while small creases and liquid damage are found along the bottom edge. Additionally, warping is observed along the right edge near the top of the sought after cardboard scroll while some small pin holes/hole punch are present throughout, mostly near the bottom and through the cards of Butch Goring, Ted Bulley and Thomas Gradin at the top right. Finally, some light creasing is seen towards the middle of the sheet as well around the card of Greg Carroll As the title indicates, the backs were not printed. A sensational display piece that will impress you and your entourage for sure, with multiple options to consider when this captivating rarity arrives.
