Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
The first North American major professional hockey team to feature player numbers on the front of their jersey, the Chicago Cougars joined the WHA in 1972 as an original franchise, and competed in the league for a trio of seasons. Folding after the 1974-75 season, the Cougars player-owners Ralph Backstrom, Dave Dryden and player-coach Pat Stapleton were unable to secure needed funding, with most of the Cougar players going to the expansion Denver Spurs in a dispersal draft. Exceptionally rare, we have an original Chicago Cougars wool team jacket from the 1970s, along with a short-sleeved mesh Cougars training shirt. Produced of heavy wool in Cougars colours, the solid green with gold trim jacket features a tackle twill crest over the left breast with embroidered detailing, with a second crest to the upper reverse again with embroidered detailing. Approx an adult's size medium or large, the jacket survives in beautiful condition, including the interior satin lining, with just light overall wear present. The shirt is mesh in off white, with a Cougars crest to the left breast.
