Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
With the league's inaugural player draft held in Anaheim, California on February 12 and 13, 1972, the WHA embarked on it's first season that fall, with the inaugural games taking place on October 11, 1972. The matches featured the Alberta Oilers winning 7-4 over the Ottawa Nationals, and the Cleveland Crusaders 2-0 over the Quebec Nordiques. The games were officiated by the WHA's senior referees, including Ron Ego (Ottawa vs Alberta) and Bob Sloan (Cleveland vs Quebec). This referees jersey was worn by Sloan in the WHA's first contest (the two matches were played simultaneously), and according to the accompanying LOA, it originates from the Sloan family. Sporting a red and blue striping pattern, Gerry Cosby tagging is affixed to the collar (measures out to size 46), with a chenille WHA crest over the left breast. The reverse has "2" in layered tackle twill, with "Sloan" across the nameplate in matching material. We should also note that the zipper is currently stuck. Remaining in gorgeous condition with the colouration rich, the jersey shows no damage or obtrusive marks.
