Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023

A sometimes-confusing issue and study in itself due to multiple variations, the Diamond Match Co. matchbooks featuring NHL players from the 1930s are one of the hockey collecting hobby’s most underrated treasures. Offered here, we present this collection of thirteen (13) Diamond Match silver and tan hockey matchbook covers dating from 1933 to 1939 that includes four (4) that are still full and complete, two (2) of which are still in their original cellophane packaging. Consisting of five (5) silver and eight (8) tan coloured examples, the likes of Ching Johnson, Bill Beveridge, Syd Howe (x2), Dave Schriner, Eddie Shore, Dit Clapper (x2) and Lionel Conacher are included as well as full book displaying the images of Nelson Stewart and Dave Kerr and unopened books of Art Chapman and Bert Connolly. Staring with the books void of matches, all the tan offerings remain in excellent condition and show wear via their staple holes but present with intact strikers and light folding creases plus some toning at the ends on the reverses. For the silvers, presenting with some heavier wear, all show signs of use on their strikers and show similar albeit heavier fold lines/creasing to go along with the staple holes and light surface wear. Of note, the examples of Shore and one of the Dit Clapper's show some foxing/spots/stains on their reverses. For the full unused books, both remain in excellent condition with light spots of stains/foxing over each while the books still in their original packaging show no wear to make note of other than that the cellophane itself is split or cracked in areas from age. Lastly, also included with the lot is the outer cardboard box from a pack of Imperial Tobacco "Derby" cigarettes that dates to circa 1912-13. Flattened, glued together and missing the inner sliding portion, the pack would have held six (6) cigarettes and a card from the C57 series. Displaying good graphics, a tear is seen over the front as well as paper residue stuck to the reverse to go along with the typical edge, corner and surface wear occurred from age and handling.
