Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Two classic and visually appealing sets released by O-Pee-Chee during the late-1980s, offered here is this lot consisting of three (3) complete assemblies of the company's 1987-88 and 1988-89 releases for a total of six (6) complete sets and 1584 total cards. Starting with the earlier 1987-88 offerings, all three (3) sets are found to be in an overall high-grade range of EX-MT to NM. Featuring the second year card of Canadiens star goalie, Patrick Roy, as well as the first-year cardboard examples of players like Luc Robitaille, Adam Oates, Ron Hextall, Claude Lemieux and Vincent Damphousse, all are found to be in a mirroring EX-MT to NM condition range after inspection, joined by cards of key stars such as Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky in the same range. With the other star players that are dotted throughout the checklist found to be in the same high-grade neighbourhood, including Yzerman, Messier, Coffey and Bourque among others, it is worth mentioning that the rookie cards of Ron Hextall all have a small factory print line at the top border.
For the 1988-89 sets, the story is much the same with all three (3) accumulations in the condition scope of EX-MT to NM including the rookie cards of Joe Nieuwendyk, Brett Hull and Brendan Shanahan. For the set's other key rookie card, that of Pierre Turgeon, two (2) are seen as being in the scope of EX-MT to NM while the other is in the range of EX-MT+ with a very small dent along the bottom right side border. With other stars in a grade range that is consistent with the rest of the set, including players such as Yzerman, Messier, Coffey and Bourque as well as Mario Lemieux (two of his cards have tiny print marks along the left border) and Wayne Gretzky (1st Kings card), it is worth mentioning for transparency that one of the sets has a low-grade copy of card #99, the checklist, which is badly creased, as well as card #103.
