Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2023
One of the oldest known sports today, with 2,000-year-old depictions on the walls of tombs in Egypt and stone carvings indicating that Sumerians, who lived in what is now Iraq, boxed at least 5,000 years ago, boxing got its start as an exhausting and brutal spectacle and grew into an international affair that has produced some of the world’s greatest athletes. Offered here, is this collection of boxing cards dating between 1910 and 1951. Mostly low-grade offerings, the group is lead in terms of value by a copy of Joe Louis' 1938 WA & AC Churchman Boxing Personalities cardboard that is around the scope of FR to GD due to a crease and a stain over the lower front. Followed up by 1910 ATC T220 Champion Athlete & Prize Fighter Series Mecca Back cards of James Corbett, Tommy Burns and Marvin Hart, all three show corner wear and are again around the grade neighbourhood of FR to GD except for the Burns example which is closer to PR, the Corbett sports a crease, the Burns shows a small partial tear at the top right, creasing, staining on the reverse and small areas of paper loss while the Hart is the best of the three (3) and has a small stain along its top edge. For the rest of the lot, 1948 Leaf Knock-Out Bubble Gum Boxing examples of Johnny Coulon and Gus Lesnevich are included, both in the vicinity of FR to GD condition while the final three (3) cards are those from Topps' 1951 Ringside set of Pete Scalzo, Bob Baker and Johnny Saxton, all around the scope of GOOD condition with the Baker having a couple of creases, mostly noticeable on the reverse, worth mentioning for accuracy.
