Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Collectors who have always admired the smile-provoking artwork of Bob Pelkowski, which appeared on mugs, pennants, iron-on transfers and big prints like these, might just flip-out with this terrific ensemble of "Sporticatures". Totaling 71 and including a group of 12 that have been signed by their depicted athlete, the large prints measure 11" x 14" each. With a master set consisting of 67 total prints including a rare never before seen example of Stan Mikita, two (2) edited versions of Phil Esposito and ten (10) Walker Press versions, the group offered here is missing the aforementioned Mikita variant, the Esposito "152 points on trophy" variant and the print of Tim Eccelstone for that complete/masters set designation. Stars present include the Esposito and Hull brothers, Cheevers, Bucyk, Sanderson, Cournoyer, Gilbert, Giacomin, Mikita (4), Park, Ullman and the Mahovlich bros., along with Favell, Lacroix, Dornhoefer, Magnuson, Angotti, Martin, Stapleton, Korab, Berenson, Roberts, Sabourin, Balon, Stanfield and McKenzie. For the signed examples, the likes of Park, Hadfield, B. Hull, D. Hull, Ullman, Martin, Magnuson, Cournoyer, Ellis, P. Mahovlich, Parise and Gilbert are included, all having signed over their images with blue marker ink autographs that display without issue. Also including the smaller 9" x 12" Walker Press versions totalling ten (10) that includes examples of Berenson (St. Louis), P. and T. Esposito, Gilbert, Hadfield, B. Hull, F. Mahovlich (Detroit), Mikita, Magnuson and Stapleton, duplicate photos are found of Park, Hadfield, B. Hull, D. Hull, Ullman, Martin and Magnuson due to their includes signed versions. Also including the Pat Stapleton variant showing him in his Indianapolis Racers uniform as well as a modern reproduction of Bill Goldsworthy that is displayed with a cut signature of his that was used in the original printing process and fourteen (14) other modern reproductions, the group is largely found to be in the same condition range throughout and avoiding large unsightly flaws, most appear in excellent condition and are nice and crispy white in colour while others show toning of varying degrees, some small corner creases and some marks/spots on their reverses from the art on the front sides. Of note, the example of Frank Mavhovlich in a Detroit jersey is a low-grade specimen with stains, creases and paper loss on the reverse.
