Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023

Arriving under the bright lights of the Big Apple for the start of the 1996-97 season after rejecting a three-year deal with the St. Louis Blues worth $15 million, Wayne Gretzky would play out the final three (3) years of his storied NHL career as a member of the Rangers, fittingly retiring in 1999 after 249 points in 234 games with the Blueshirts. Presented here, we offer this stick used by Wayne during his swan song season of 1998-99. A Hespeler made CS Pro model with “Gretzky” factory graphics appearing over the upper shaft, Wayne’s familiar shaved “Jack the Gripper” is in place over the handle/knob while the original black tape with baby powder residue is still firmly affixed over the blade. Of note, the uniqueness of the stick comes from the fact that the blade is spray painted black, something that Gretzky did on occasion as a member of both the Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers but are extremely rare to find examples of. Exhibiting good game-use, marks and abrasions are seen over the shaft and blade including a nick to the upper part of the blade stem while the blade tape sports a cut over the forehand side and marks over both the forehand and backhand. A true relic from the best player to ever play the game of hockey, a Shawn Chaulk LOA will accompany the piece along with an additional LOA from Joe Esposito.
