Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
The last active player upon his retirement in 2004 that witnessed action in the WHA, Mark Messier is a veteran of over 1,700 regular season NHL games, with appearances made in an astounding 15 All-Star Games. The only player to captain two different teams to Stanley Cup championships, offered here is this collection of three (3) Mark Messier rookie cards from O-Pee-Chee's 1980-81 hockey release including two (2) that have been signed by the 2007 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee. For the first signed card, presenting in the condition range of VG-EX to EX for its effort, the image on the front remains fairly well centered while the reverse is more off kilter. Sporting corner wear to all four (4) points and featuring what is either an ink mark or printing defect on Messier's nose, the hockey legend has signed over the front with a black ballpoint pen ink signature that displays without issue. For the second card, heavily off-center over both the front and reverse, with slight rough cut edges and some minor corner wear, the card is found in the vicinity of EX condition with Messier's autograph once again present over the front in black ballpoint pen that displays flawlessly. Lastly, the third of the three included rookie cards is an unsigned example that is off-center from bottom-to-top and sports wear/dings to all four corners that is heaviest at the top two points. In the neighborhood of VG-EX to EX condition, the card has a small crease at the top left border and a surface crease to the right of the Oilers logo on his chest. A JSA Auction LOA will accompany the lot.
