Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Two players who played their entire NHL career’s in the blue and white of the Toronto Maple Leafs and went on to both be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Syl Apps and Turk Broda combined to win a total of eight (8) Stanley Cups collectively including championships in 1942, 1947 and 1948 in which they were teammates. Offered here, is this Toronto Maple Leafs photo display titled “Best Buds, 1948” that features Leafs HOFers Syl Apps and Turk Broda. Measuring out to full dimensions of 25” x 28 ½”, the piece displays with a full colour locker room photo of the legendary duo that measures approximately 15 ½” x 15 ½” with the title “Best Buds, 1948” written underneath in pencil. A limited-edition offering that is serial numbered “75/75” in pencil at the bottom left-hand corner and remains in excellent condition, the piece is triple matted and housed in a simple black frame with no glass over the front that shows light wear to the edges and corners that is worth mentioning for accuracy. Having had a Maple Leafs vintage style logo puck mounted along the bottom of the piece, the appeal of the piece is heightened by the pair of 2017-18 Leaf Stickworks “Lumbergraphs” cards of each player that have been added to the bottom, each containing a piece of stick that has been signed by Apps and Broda individually with the autographs remaining legible despite their age. It must be noted that the cut-out mats around the cards are partially unglued. A beautiful piece sure to add a new element to any advanced Maple Leafs or HOF collection.
