Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Hailing from a period of time that saw the Toronto Maple Leafs in the middle of their run of three straight Stanley Cup championships, the first time in franchise history that such a feat had been accomplished, offered here is this miniature hockey stick signed by Leafs defenceman Bill Barilko. Having been called up for the first time from the PCHL’s Hollywood Wolves during the 1946-47 season, Barilko would patrol the Leafs blueline until his death in the spring of 1951 after scoring the Stanley Cup winning goal in overtime against the Montreal Canadiens. Measuring 12” in length from top-to-bottom, the small wooden stick is stamped with “New Hamburg, Ont. 1948” over one side with the blade having been signed by “Bashing Bill” in lead pencil. Having been shellacked over the entire length of the stick, including the signature, the autograph remains nice and bold because of it. Remaining in nice condition with some wear to the bottom of the blade and up near the top of the shaft being observed, a couple of red coloured paint spots are present directly to the right to the stamping that is worth mentioning for accuracy.
