Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Hailing from a shortened season that saw him inch ever so slightly closer to the all-time goal scoring record owned for the time being by Wayne Gretzky, Alexander Ovechkin would pot 24 goals and record 42 points in 45 games played during the 2020-21 NHL campaign, using these photo-matched gloves in his rotation between February 21st and March 15th. CCM Pro models in the Capitals red, white and navy colourway, CCM wordmark logos are embroidered over each cuff in navy and red with Ovi’s “GR8” identifiers sewn into the outside of each gauntlet as well. Additional embroidery is seen over each thumb, with the name of Ovi’s late brother featured on each glove as well as the image of an eye. Sporting light-to-moderate game-use via wear to the vinyl white graphics over the top of each hand, Ovi has added the number “9” to each palm (denoting pair number 9) in black ink with both palms showing rubbing from Alex’s stick, the heaviest of which is seen over the left glove and is coloured red from his handle/knob tape.
Regarding the aforementioned photo-matches, the gloves are matched with Getty Image #1306316715 (March 9th, 2021 vs New Jersey) to the wear marks in the white stripe extending up to the wrist from the ring finger of the left glove as well as to the “9” written at base of the palm in the right glove. Additionally, the gloves are also matched with Getty #1304604223 (February 28th, 2021 vs New Jersey) to the “9” penned at the base of the palm in the left glove and to the loose black thread in the palm on the outside edge right where you can see the red and blue sections on the top meeting.
