Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/28/2023
A fabulous opportunity to score some captivating 1968-69 Topps cards presents itself here, with the entire 132-card assembly up for grabs here in an overall consistent range of VG to VG-EX with soft corners throughout and some cards creased. Led by graded copies of card #34 picturing Terry Sawchuk (KSA MINT 8.5) and #121 checklist 1-132 (CEX 7.0 Near Mint), the notable 2nd year card of Bobby Orr is seen as being in the scope of FR to G condition due to creases, surface wear and corner issues while the first-year cardboard of Bernie Parent is in the same range, plagued by a large top-to-bottom heavy crease and corner problems. For the better condition cards, 1-Cheevers (off-center top-to-bottom, top left corner ding and scratch on front), 20-Mikita (3 soft corners) and 62-Cournoyer (80-20 centering and 2 soft corners) are all viewed as being in the proximity of VG-EX to EX while 7-P. Esposito (4 soft corners), 16-Hull (4 soft corners), 31-Mahovlich (4 soft corners), 61-Beliveau (tiny crease near top left corner) and 122-Bower (4 soft corners) are all around the vicinity of VG to VG-EX condition. With the card of #29 Gordie Howe in the scope of G to VG (soft corners and small crease at the right side) and #123 Tim Horton bringing up the rear at FR to G with creases and corner wear, the other star players in the checklist are in conditions that are consistent with the rest of the set. Topps’ first official hockey set offered throughout the USA, other than the ’66-67 Test issue, (and featuring members from the six expansion teams for the first time), the group is bound to offer its lucky winning bidder a splendid trip down memory lane.
