Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
77 cards larger than the set from the previous season, the 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee release rang in at 341 total cards, the biggest set released by the Canadian manufacturer up to that point and came at an important time in hockey history as the WHA entered the professional climate with its first season of play that same year. On the auction block here is this starter set of 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee that includes 278 of the 341 cards in the checklist, with the grouping here largely remaining in VG to VG-EX condition with a few exceptions both better and worse. Missing a total of sixty-three (63) cards for a complete assembly, the notable offerings included are led by an EX copy of card #227, the all-star card of Orr and Park and a VG-EX to EX copy of card #137 picturing Tony Esposito on the front that shows a small corner ding at the bottom right while cards a tad worse and falling into the unform condition range of VG to VG-EX seen throughout the rest of the set include the likes of 8-Dionne, 14-Clarke (corner wear), 58-Orr In Action, 59-Lafleur (humidity warping), 92-Plante (corner wear), 145-Dryden (corner wear), 190-Checklist (marked), 228-Hull AS (corner wear), 247-Dryden AS (corner wear), 334-Checklist (marked) and 340-Cheevers (WHA – corner wear). For the last two noteworthy cards on the list of keys, both card #6, the checklist, and #336, the WHA card of Bobby Hull, are seen as being in FR to G condition with both showing creases and the checklist having been marked. With the rest of the stars in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set, 5 or 6 common cards have scuffs with some paper loss on their reverses worth noting. Additionally, also included is a complete 1972 O-Pee-Chee Team Canada subset that includes EX to EX-MT cards of both Phil Esposito and Ken Dryden.
