Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Always a hobby favourite and featuring a groovy array of colours as well as a strong group of National Hockey League star power, up on the block this time is a near complete assembly of O-Pee-Chee’s fabled 1971-72 release. Ringing in with 261 of the set’s 264 cards present and accounted for, the group is missing only those of the two checklists (#111 and #264) as well card #159 of Dave Dryden to reach completion. Overall viewed as a lower grade assembly of the ever-popular release with most showing flaws such as corner wear or creases, a few cards are found to be a bit better off. The key RC of Canadiens goalie Ken Dryden is seen as being in the grade scope of PR due to a multiple creases that plague the cardboard while the first-year cardboard of Marcel Dionne and Guy Lafleur are seen as being in the condition vicinities of G to VG and GOOD respectively with both showing creases though the ones on the Dionne example are lighter than the ones on the Lafleur rookie. For the rest of the key cards, the group is led by VG to VG-EX specimens of cards #50-Hull, 60-Perrault, 100-Orr, 114-Clarke and 251-Orr All-Star while cardboard hovering in the range of G to VG includes the likes of 20-P. Esposito (corner wear and small crease with a wax stain over the front), 193-Sittler (wear throughout), 195-Plante (crease) and 263-Beliveau. Rounding out the contingent of key cards, #’s 245-Orr Trophy’s, 261-Hull All-Star and #262-Howe “Mr. Hockey” are found to be in the range of GOOD while finally, card #110 of Tony Esposito is perceived as being in the vicinity of PR to FR condition due to multiple creases throughout.
