Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

Dave Stieb entered the record books on September 2nd 1990 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium vs the Cleveland Indians. It had taken him two hours and 27 minutes, and 123 pitches, to make personal and team history, with Pat Borders being the first to congratulate him before the entire team hoisted Stieb onto their shoulders. It is the opinion of the original owner that this is the jersey that Borders was wearing when he caught Dave Stieb’s first no-hitter in Blue Jays history. Previously sold as part of our Spring 2020 auction (Lot: 524), We were not able to find a clear enough photo of Borders from the September 2nd 1990 game to confirm it is the jersey. But, video stills taken from the game did show consistencies with the button placement and the position of the wording "TORONTO" in relation to the front seam and also to the buttons and the Blue Jays crest. Now having been beautifully framed and coming to market once again, Borders has signed the back of the jersey with a bold blue ink signature that displays perfectly and has added an inscription reading “Game Used 90” underneath in matching ink. Toronto’s 6th round draft choice in 1982, Borders would win two (2) World Series championships with the Blue Jays in 1992 and 1993 was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1992 World Series. Originally showing game-wear via sweat stains to the inner collar with more showing on the lower inner portion of the button-front, a number of red transfer marks were observed in the middle front area of the jersey with a few small scattered game marks/stains on various areas of the garment seen as well with the sleeve cuffs having slightly faded over time from use, multiple washings and age. According to our consignor, and an included letter of provenance, this jersey was obtained from Pat Borders in 2018 and is originally from his personal collection.
Framed so that the reverse of the jersey and the autograph are showing on top of a black background, the entire thing is matted under black and blue while a photo of Borders tagging out Frank Thomas is seen added to the bottom of the display along with Blue Jays logo plates and an information plaque that grace the bottom as well. All housed in a sleek black frame that displays beautifully that appears to be flaw free and in its original packaging, full dimensions measure out to approx. 33 ½” x 41 ½”. Please note, due to the size and weight og the item, special shipping arrangements might be required and local pickup is encouraged.
